How to Play Basketball Blog – Finish Them!

If you have done everything we have talked about in this How to Play Basketball series then you will be in great position at the end of games to make a play.  If you are on offense then you have to want the ball.  Jerry West was known as “Mr. Clutch” because he always delivered in big moments.  He is the only NBA player to be named the Finals MVP on the losing team!  Now we all know when it comes to clutch there is only one person who comes to mind, His Airness, Michael Jordan who averaged 33 points/game in the playoffs (Check this link out Michael Jordan Clutch Moments).  Goooooooodness!  In pick-up it is your time to be clutch!  Let’s discuss 2 aspects of being clutch: wanting the ball and doing what you normally do.

At the end of the game you have to want the ball in your hands.  Now this does not always mean you will make the final shot but it does mean you will make the final decision.  Coaches, fans and players all love the player who will step up when their team needs them the most.  When you are sitting at game point you have to go get the ball and make a play.  The most important part about being clutch is wanting the ball in those situations when a big play is needed.  If you are seeking these situations in pick-up games you will build your confidence to do the same thing in real games.  Remember we are building good habits!

Nothing should change though.  This is just like any other possession.  Do not make it harder than it has to be because nothing has changed except the score.  The rim is still the same size.  The court is still the same width and length.  The ball has the same amount of air in it. You need to do what you NORMALLY do to make shots.  You should know your go to move as we discussed in Your Haymaker and Your Counter, so you should be ready to take and make the shot.  Think Mortal Kombat and finish them!
