How to Play Basketball Blog -Your Haymaker and Your Counter

Last time we talked about getting to your spot and how important that is to developing your skill.  What we did not talk about is how you get to that spot.  Just like you have a favorite spot, you will have a move that is more effective than others.  You know what move you use that gives you the best results.  The key is being able to use that move when you need it the most.

Think for a moment about the move you use more than any other move.  I use the hesitation move more than any other move.  Because I tend to be quicker than my defenders the change of speed usually leaves them helpless.  Think about your natural talents and your primary move should incorporate what you do naturally well.  If you are a post player with a big body, a jump hook could be an unstoppable move for you.  If you are a great shooter then it might be that jab step that backs your defenders up enough to knock down a shot.  Whatever move you have you need to perfect it.  You need to be able to use that move so much that your defender is only thinking about stopping that one move.

And now for the counter.  Once you have your defender thinking about stopping your one move, you have them exactly where you want them. Now is when you pull out your counter move.  For me the counter move is the crossover because as soon as I begin to hesitate the defender starts to jump to that side and then bam!  There goes the crossover.  So if you are the post player with a big body then you could shoulder fake to that side you usually go to and spin the other way for a layup.  If you are the shooter and that jab step has been backing them up, next time they will not fall for it.  Great!  This is when you use the jab and go move to penetrate into the teeth of the defense.  Your counter move is the difference between being able to score and being impossible to stop.

When you have your go to move and the counter move it will make you extremely difficult to guard!  I call these progressive moves as one builds off the other.  If you are using combinations of progressive moves you are giving yourself a mental edge that will allow you to shred your opponents.  You will have your haymaker and your counter punch.
