How to Play Basketball Blog – You Need Goals

How many successful people have you ever heard of without goals?  That is like taking a trip without deciding where you are going ahead of time.  Try that and see where you end up; probably  not anywhere important.

Unfortunately that is how we work on our game.  We go to the court and just play the game.  Awesome.  Except that you don’t even know what you are doing.  Will you get better by just playing the game?  Yes.  Will you be the best player you could be?  Absolutely not!  The whole concept in How to Play Baksetball: A Guide to Getting Better By Playing Pick-up Games is to use the pick-up games to work on your game. So you have to set specific goals when you are playing.

I talk about 3 areas where you can set goals to get better: fitness, fundamentals and skills.  If you are out of shape good luck being a good player for an entire game.  You wouldn’t even last two possessions against real competition.  If you cannot do the basics well, how on God’s green Earth are you going to do play a fast paced sport that involves split second decision making?  Not very well.  The skills part is really the area where you can show off a little bit.  You can develop the type of skills that get you noticed by more than just the casual fan and your friends.

If you set goals in each one of these areas you will start to go to the court focused.  A person focused on a goal can turn into an unstoppable force.  Do you want to be unstoppable?
