How to Play Basketball Blog – Run Like a Track Meet

“Ruuuuuunnnnn!”  I can still remember Coach Williams’ voice screaming at everybody to run harder.  The man is a hall of famer.  The man has an 80% winning percentage.  The man has 2 national titles.  Maybe, just maybe, he has a method to his madness.

How many times can you remember not running back on defense the last time you played?  How many times can you remember not sprinting to offense the last time you played?  If the answer to either of these questions is more than 0 then we have some work to do.

I know I was a guard but for right now I want to talk to the bigs.  Big men, I mean anybody who primarily scores from the post, I am going to help you increase your scoring average right now.  All you have to do is run the floor on every, single possession.  Forget working on your drop step or your jump hook, just run the floor every possession.  There you go I just increased your scoring average.  If you sprint to offense you will get easy lay-ups, trust me.  A big man that can run the floor is like a diamond in the rough.  If you sprint to every single possession, watch your stock rise.

Our JV team at Carolina was not more talented than many of our opponents but we ran them ragged.  I can remember the official having to call a timeout because one of the players on the other team vomited at half court during the game.  My AAU team, the Apex Force, was not more talented than the top teams in the nation but we ran them up and down the court all the way to many of the top tournaments in the country.  How?  We just ran the floor better than anybody we played.  You do not have to be fast to run the floor; you just have to have a little heart. When you run the floor each possession you give your team the chance for easy baskets and what offense doesn’t need a few easy baskets?

Make it a point to sprint to defense and offense.  Run like it is a track meet.  Run like you are running for your life.  Once you do that I know you will start to see some benefits to your entire game because you will be in better shape.
